Crossing Bridges: The Lifelong Lessons of Hans Karl Welz

Describe a man who has positively impacted your life.

Some individuals leave an indelible mark on your life, shaping not just what you know, but how you come to know it. For me, that person was Hans Karl Welz, a mentor who imparted more than mere knowledge. He taught me the art of learning itself—an approach not bound by static truths but guided by intellectual evolution.

Karl Hans Welz

Welz’s philosophy was one of constant growth. He saw ideas not as final destinations but as stepping stones—pathways meant to be questioned, transcended, and reshaped. To him, genuine care extended beyond understanding. It was about challenging assumptions, pushing boundaries, and staying humble in the face of infinite possibilities.

His approach to life and invention was equally profound. His creations weren’t conclusions but provocations—open doors inviting others to think deeper, dream bigger, and imagine more. “My thoughts are but temporary bridges,” he often said, “meant to be crossed, not worshipped.” This insight remains one of the most transformative lessons I’ve ever encountered.

In reflecting on his impact, I honor not just the man but the way of being, he exemplified—curious, compassionate, and ceaselessly striving toward a greater understanding of the world and ourselves. Through his teachings, Hans Karl Welz inspired a life of exploration, and for that, I will always be grateful.

~ Knights of Runes ~

The purpose of KOR is to be a supportive community where we can learn together and heal each other. It is a laboratory where we learn to use the rooms effectively. Within a community, we all have a slightly different experience and interpretation of the runes. Together, we have a greater experience than as individuals, but we share this greater experience by sharing our experiences.

The community is meant to be a safe space where we can share our experiences and insights without being ridiculed or judged. We must be accepting of others, respect that they are on their own journey, and learn from them. We must also set aside our personal ego and reach out to each other with care and commitment. We look after each other’s interests, aware of our differences and supporting our differences. As an international community, we must be mindful of the different value sets, belief systems, and social norms that we have grown up with. We need to take the time to know the people that spend time with us before we become judgmental of them.

Fostering a sense of community on an online forum is not an easy process. We don’t have the natural clues of how to talk and communicate, etc. But we have a strong interest and unifying purpose: to work with the runes and to incorporate them into our lives. That should remain our focus all the time.

The Runatal songs start with FA and UR, which mean “to help” and “to heal.” These should be the primary focus within the KOR community. If you want to manifest these qualities in your personal life, then KOR is a place to start. We are laboring with people of a similar mindset. So, when you post something, comment, or meet online, let’s always ask ourselves:

How can I help those who share in the common community?

How can I bring healing and restore wholeness?

How can I contribute to the sense of community that we all desire to have?

By following these guidelines, we will build a thriving community, aware of the spiritual laws and capable of attaining the rune knowledge and capability we seek. When we attain together the state of the rune LAF: “to sing to the assembled people, I name the divine names…” then we will truly benefit from the runes and the community. Let’s sing as individuals the songs that bind us together, that motivate us to grow and master the runes.
