The Hearth of Nostalgia

What makes you feel nostalgic?

There’s something magical about the smell of smoke from a coal stove. It has a way of carrying me back through the years, to a time when life was simpler, warmer—full of love and laughter. My earliest memory is sitting with my mother, polishing the black coal stove until it gleamed. The silver trimmings caught the light, a testament to the care and pride she put into creating a home.

Those moments weren’t just about chores; they were a ritual of connection. In the kitchen, surrounded by the comforting warmth of the stove, the family would gather. The scent of meals cooking, hearty and nourishing, was an invitation to togetherness. It was more than just a place to prepare food; it was the hearth, the heart of our home.

Now, when I think back, it feels less like a memory and more like a dream—a dream of days gone by, when love was a tangible thing. My mother was the anchor of those moments, her presence wrapping us in a sense of belonging.

Today, things are different. My mother lives far away, and the cruel irony of life is that she can no longer recognize me as her son. Our conversations are fleeting, strained by distance and the merciless passage of time. Thankfully, my sisters are close to her and can ensure her needs are met, but the closeness we once shared is no longer there.

The ache of nostalgia is a bittersweet thing. It reminds me of how it felt to be loved and cared for unconditionally. Now, as the breadwinner, the roles have reversed. I am the one others rely on, the provider, the protector. While I’m proud to fill that role, it contrasts starkly with the carefree days when I could bask in the warmth of being someone’s child.

The coal stove remains a symbol of that love—a bridge to a time when happiness was as simple as sitting by the fire, feeling the presence of family. Even now, that smell can bring it all back, a flicker of light in the solitude of memory. It’s a reminder that while the present may demand strength, the past will always offer its quiet comfort.

The Golden Balance: A Harmonious Vision for Team Identity and Excellence

If you started a sports team, what would the colors and mascot be?

My team’s colors are a harmonious blend: 61.81% red and 38.19% gold. Red symbolizes boldness, energy, and the fiery drive to confront challenges head-on—a warning to opponents. Gold, by contrast, embodies excellence, perfection, and the striving to transcend limits. Together, these colors reflect the golden mean: a dynamic balance that favors the vigor and determination of the red fire while grounding it in the disciplined pursuit of greatness symbolized by gold.

In the context of a sports team, this balance tilts toward the physical and mental domains of energy, power, and victory. Red, the fire element, ignites the will to achieve optimal performance, while gold tempers this fire, serving as a reminder that true greatness is forged through balance and precision. Gold’s alchemical resonance evokes the transformation of the ordinary into the extraordinary, grounding ambition in a quest for perfection.

Two mascots unite the team’s spirit: the caracal and the golden earth dragon. The caracal, sleek and agile, represents the fire’s unleashed power and grace, embodying the 38.19% of acknowledging individual prowess. The golden dragon, steadfast and wise, symbolizes 61.81% of the team’s grounding in virtue and collective strength. This intentional inversion of ratios between the colors and mascots creates a perfect harmony between outward action and inward essence.

The red and gold colors signify the external dynamism of teamwork—fierce competitiveness balanced by the pursuit of excellence. Simultaneously, the mascots reflect the inner dynamic of the team: the caracal’s individual grace complements the dragon’s collective wisdom. Together, they form a unified expression of the team’s identity, balancing ambition with virtue, and fire with grounding.

This philosophy, rooted in the principles of the golden mean, offers a model for all areas of life. By striking a balance and finding a counterbalance, we achieve harmony in our pursuits, guided by the interplay of energy, striving, and inner strength.

Intentions Over Resolutions: A Vision for the New Year

A New Year’s resolution is typically a commitment to change a specific behavior, such as quitting smoking or starting to exercise. An intention, however, focuses on a broader goal or aspiration you want to achieve within the year. While resolutions are often made with sincerity, they frequently fail because they lack the structural link between the intent and the practical steps needed to realize it. For example, the failure to establish supportive habits often makes it challenging to sustain the resolution.

An alternative and more effective approach is to focus on the outcome in terms of who you want to be or become. This involves creating a vivid, emotionally charged visualization of your desired future self. Instead of simply setting a goal like “get fit,” imagine and deeply feel what it would be like to live as a fit person. Picture the energy, confidence, and joy you would experience, and craft a mental “movie script” of your life once you’ve achieved this state.

Taking it a step further, you can recognize that fitness itself is the result of a more disciplined life. Rather than envisioning only the physical aspects of fitness, you might focus on what it means to embody discipline. Imagine yourself consistently showing up for your commitments, managing your time effectively, and staying focused on your priorities. Visualize how it feels to live with clarity, purpose, and control over your choices.

By creating and regularly revisiting this compelling vision—whether it’s about being fit, disciplined, or both—you align your actions with your aspirations. This approach naturally draws you toward your desired future, reducing inner resistance and making change feel effortless and inspiring rather than forced.

A Hero’s Song,woven in fate

Born beneath the boundless sky,
A son emerges, reaching high.
Breaking free from earthly ties,
Bathed in sun, a bold surprise.
Brave and bold, his destiny to try.

Through trials, thoughts begin to form,
Thrusting forward in the storm.
The truth, a thorn, a guiding norm.
Triumphant, he will overcome.
True strength within, no room for harm.

Forward fearless, fate unknown,
Facing fires, fears all flown.
Finding freedom, far from home,
Feasting flames, where spirits roam.
Fulfilling fate, his journey’s own.

Gifted grace, a glorious gain,
Growing grand, a noble reign.
Gathering strength, to quell all pain.
Giving generously, again and again.
Good deeds guide him, through sun and rain.

Eternal echoes, love’s refrain,
Enchanting eyes, a sweet refrain.
Embracing joy, a joyful train.
Everlasting bond, a sweet refrain.
Exalted hearts, forever sane.

The Only Influence That Truly Matters: My Wife (and the Occasional Grumpy Cat Meme)

Who are the biggest influences in your life?

So, they ask, “Who are the biggest influences in your life?”
Now, I’m a man of reason. I’ve dabbled in the philosophies of Rosicrucianism, wrestled with the ideas of Gurdjieff, and even dipped my toes into the esoteric world of Runemasters (don’t judge). I’ve faced down politicians, scoffed at marketers, and generally maintained a healthy skepticism of anyone trying to sway my deeply held beliefs.

But then, there’s my wife.

The look that can influence me with ease

Let’s be honest, “Happy wife, happy life” isn’t just a saying; it’s a universal truth. My wife? She can make me feel like I’m walking on sunshine with a single smile, or send me spiraling into a pit of despair with a furrowed brow. It’s terrifying, really.
Think of it this way: I can withstand the onslaught of political rhetoric, the siren song of consumerism, and even the existential dread that comes with contemplating the universe. But a single look from my wife, a quiet sigh, a muttered “Hmm…” can throw my carefully constructed worldview into chaos.

Now, before you accuse me of being whipped, let me clarify: she doesn’t influence my core beliefs. I still firmly believe in the power of critical thinking and the importance of questioning authority. But when it comes to the day-to-day, to the joy and spontaneity of life, my wife is the undisputed champion.
She’s the one who drags me out of my comfort zone, who encourages me to try new things, who reminds me to have fun. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to make their partner happy? It’s a win-win situation, if you ask me.

So, there you have it. The biggest influence in my life? Not some ancient philosopher or charismatic leader, but the woman who shares my life and makes it infinitely richer. And occasionally, a really good Grumpy Cat meme.

Disclaimer: This blog post is written with a healthy dose of humor, a touch of exaggeration and with my wife’s permission. My wife is, of course, a wonderful and independent human being who deserves all the credit in the world for being, well, herself.

I hope you enjoyed this slightly tongue-in-cheek take on a serious question!
